Post-war reconstruction in Lebanon: A bill synonymous with a foregone conclusion

While hostilities have been ongoing unabated for over a year, alternating between periods of lower and higher intensity, the cost of the war continues to mount. According to the World Bank, an estimated $8.5 billion worth of damages and losses have piled up until late October 2023. Material damage in areas that were the most hit by Israeli bombardment, such as southern Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley and Beirut’s southern suburbs, accounts for around 60 percent of the total, with the remainder due to economic losses in trade, agriculture, tourism and other sectors.According to other estimates, by the Lebanese government, experts and private research firms, the cost ranges between $10 billion to $13 billion, excluding and including the damage incurred in November.
