BEIRUT — Beirut's disaster management unit announced on Friday that more than 400 displaced people, living in tents along the capital's corniche have been transferred to a shelter center in the Karantina neighborhood, according to the state-run National News Agency.

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati said on Thursday that the ongoing war in Lebanon has displaced 1.4 million people so date.

“Based on the directives of the caretaker Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi and the efforts of Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud in cooperation with the Farah al-Ataa Association, the displaced people on the corniche were moved to a shelter center in the Karantina area," reads the disaster management unit's statement.

"The Beirut Guard Regiment, in cooperation with the Internal Security Forces, coordinated the process of transferring [the displaced persons] from the corniche to the shelter," the statement added.

The unit also indicated that a second phase will begin in a few days to move the remaining displaced individuals from the corniche to a shelter "that is currently being prepared."

The Farah al-Ataa Association has set up accommodations for around 1,200 displaced people by transforming a hangar into separate living units — complete with doors, bathrooms and electricity — to house families.
