Presidential election and Gebran Bassil’s vengeance: Political battles in parliament postponed indefinitely

Tuesday’s session aimed at electing presidents and members of parliamentary committees failed to take place due to a lack of quorum. Only 49 out of 128 MPs responded to the call of Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, falling well short of the 65 needed. As a result, Berri resorted to legislative precedents to extend the mandate of the parliamentary committees elected last year.Beyond this procedural step, it is the leader of the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM), Gebran Bassil, who appears to emerge as the main loser. He missed an opportunity to exact revenge on the four MPs who recently left his party, some of whom hold influential committee positions, starting with Ibrahim Kanaan, head of the Finance and Budget Committee.
