Resolution 1559, which provides for disarming militias in Lebanon, is back in full swing. Eleven months after calling on (the Lebanese side) to implement Security Council Resolution 1701 — voted in 2006, which calls for the withdrawal of Hezbollah to the north of the Litani River, some 40 kilometers from the border— everything seems to indicate that Israel — backed by the U.S. — is now calling for disarming the group. The same is true of the Lebanese opposition parties, led by the Lebanese Forces (LF), who, while noting that they do not hope for Hezbollah to be defeated, they also stated that it’s about time to implement Resolution 1559 (adopted 20 years ago).Does this mean that Resolution 1701 has become obsolete?
