A funeral procession took place today in the Shiite holy city of Kerbala, in central Iraq, in tribute to General Abbas Nilforoushan, who was killed in Lebanon alongside Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah during an Israeli airstrike in southern Beirut at the end of September, an AFP photographer observed.

The Revolutionary Guards announced on Friday that General Nilforoushan's body had been found "after continuous efforts" at the site of the strike targeting a Hezbollah stronghold in southern Beirut on Sept. 27. His body was flown from Beirut to Baghdad International Airport on Monday, then transported by ambulance to Kerbala.

The funeral procession made its way to the Husseiniya shrine, where a representative of Iraq's highest Shiite religious authority, Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, led the prayers in front of a large crowd. Participants waved flags of Iran, Hezbollah, and the Iraqi armed faction Kataeb Hezbollah, while chanting "death to Israel." The body will then be transported to the holy city of Mashhad in Iran, according to Sepah, a news agency affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards. Another ceremony will take place on Tuesday in Tehran, followed by the planned burial on Thursday in Isfahan, his hometown in central Iran, the agency specified.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) issued an urgent call on Monday for the protection of Lebanon’s healthcare system. "I urgently appeal for the protection of healthcare workers, ambulances, hospitals, and primary healthcare centers," said Nicolas von Arx, ICRC’s regional director for the Near and Middle East.

He expressed grave concern over attacks on healthcare facilities, the displacement of populations, and the overall strain on health systems in Lebanon. Von Arx emphasized the ICRC's priority in providing support to a healthcare sector already weakened by five years of economic crisis, through initiatives like establishing trauma treatment units in Beirut and eastern Lebanon.

He also noted increasing difficulties in accessing southern Lebanon, particularly as an Israeli airstrike injured a driver in a humanitarian convoy on the same day. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 100 out of 207 primary healthcare centers in conflict areas have shut down due to escalating violence.

The U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon's peacekeepers are "intended to stay," said French Minister of the Armed Forces Sebastien Lecornu, two days before a meeting of European contributors to the mission.

"The day the guns fall silent, there will still be this Blue Line [separating Lebanon from Israel], there will be resolution 1701 or a new resolution, there will still be a zone whose neutralization will have to be assumed," he explained on the public channel France 5.

The European countries contributing to UNIFIL (Italy, France, Spain and Ireland) are due to meet via videoconference on Wednesday to agree on their positions. Lecornu's comments echo those of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, according to whom "there will be no withdrawal of UNIFIL."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday dismissed accusations that Israeli troops deliberately targeted UNIFIL peacekeepers in Lebanon as “completely false,” and reiterated his call for the withdrawal of peacekeepers from combat zones.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the U.N.'s portrayal of attacks on the United Nations Interim Force in southern Lebanon (UNIFIL) was "shameful and worrying."

Israeli attacks on the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon violate international humanitarian law and must stop immediately, Italy, Britain, France and Germany said on Monday, according to Reuters.

In a joint statement, the four countries reaffirmed "the essential stabilizing role" that UNIFIL plays in south Lebanon, adding that Israel and other parties must guarantee the safety of peacekeepers at all times.

A house was targeted, according to many people on the scene quoted by L'Orient Today's correspondent in the region, leaving at least 11 dead, including women and children. L'Orient Today's correspondent notes that "all the inhabitants of the house" are from south Lebanon. The two-story building was reduced to nothing, and ambulances are on the scene.

The Lebanese army, from the Ehden barracks, is helping the Red Cross and Civil Defense rescue teams to transport the wounded to hospitals in the region.

Fierce battles are taking place between Hezbollah fighters and the Israeli army in Aita al-Shaab, Ramieh and Qaouzah (Bint Jbeil), according to L'Orient Today's correspondent in south Lebanon. Strikes are heard in several villages in the region. In addition, Israeli drones are continuously flying at low altitudes over villages in south Lebanon and Beirut.

The driver of a humanitarian aid convoy was injured in Lebanon's Bekaa when his truck was hit by an Israeli airstrike nearby, an official and the state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported, as cited by AFP.

"An Israeli strike fell very close to a humanitarian convoy that was passing through the village of al-Ain," Bachir Khodr, governor of the Baalbeck-Hermel region, which borders Syria, said on X.

"An Israeli strike targeted a solar panel store as a convoy of three trucks was passing towards the village of Ras Baalbeck," the NNA reported. "The blast damaged a truck and its driver was injured."

The affected convoy "was carrying humanitarian aid from the Lebanese government and its passage had been coordinated with the Red Cross and the United Nations," Lebanese Transport Minister Ali Hamiyeh, who had witnessed the convoy's departure from Beirut in the morning, told AFP.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said there was no point in indirect talks with the United States via Oman due to regional tensions, AFP reported.

The Israeli military said it killed the commander of the anti-tank unit of Hezbollah's elite Radwan Force, Kamal Naim, in an airstrike, according to reports by Haaretz.

Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan received Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati today at the Prime Minister’s Office in Jordan, the state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported.

🔴 The Israeli army has called on residents of 25 localities in southern Lebanon to evacuate their homes.


Residents of Berghlieh, Qasimieh, Nabi Qassem, Matariyet al-Shumar, Kharayeb, Mazraat Kawthariyet al-Rez, Ansar, Bablieh, Der Takla, Adloun, Ansarieh, Marouanieh, Zefta, Befrawa, Habboush, Nabatieh, Sojod, Jebaa, Ankoun, Benaafool, Qanarit, Zayta, Ernaya, Mazraat Matariyet Jebaa and Tanbourit have been ordered to "move immediately to the north of the Awali River," stated Arabic-speaking Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee on X at 12:47 p.m.


"Hezbollah's activities force the (Israeli) army to act against it. The army has no intention of harming you. For your safety, you must evacuate your homes immediately and relocate immediately north of the Awali River. For your safety, you must evacuate immediately," claimed Adraee. "Anyone in the vicinity of Hezbollah agents, facilities or weapons is putting his or her life at risk. You are forbidden to move south. Any movement towards the south can put your life in danger. We will inform you in due course so that you can return home as soon as conditions are favorable."

The Israeli army said it had intercepted several projectiles fired from Lebanon into central Israel, while AFP journalists reported hearing explosions in the area of a military base targeted yesterday by Hezbollah.


"Sirens sounded a short while ago in the Sharon, Menashe and Wadi Ara areas, and a number of projectiles were identified crossing Israeli territory from Lebanon. The air force has succeeded in intercepting all the projectiles," says a statement from the army. Yesterday evening, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for a drone attack on the Binyamina military base which, according to the Israeli army, killed four soldiers and wounded dozens.

A senior Israeli political source told Haaretz that Israel "will continue its attacks in Beirut" in the coming days.


The statement was made to refute a report by Israeli public broadcaster Kan 11, which claimed that the government had ordered the Israeli army to stop striking the Lebanese capital. Yesterday night, Israeli attacks incessantly targeted southern Lebanon:


- Border villages were the target of major military escalation — with several attempted Israeli infiltration and fierce fighting between Hezbollah fighters and Israeli forces in Mais al-Jabal, Markaba and Houla, in the Marjayoun district — reported our correspondent citing several sources. Explosions and exchanges of fire echoed throughout the area, with Hezbollah carrying out continuous attacks against Israeli forces throughout the night and until dawn.


- At 9 p.m., two Israeli strikes targeted Naqoura, in the Sour district, followed by three further strikes at 10 p.m. 


- Israeli fighter jets bombed a mosque in Shebaa, in the Hasbaya district, and targeted other areas in the neighboring villages. 


- Artillery fire shelled Aita al-Shaab, Ramieh and Qaouzah in the Bint Jbeil district. 


- Airstrikes bombed Taybeh, in the Marjayoun district. 


- Three strikes targeted Shamaa, in the Sour district, and two others targeted Tayr Harfa (Sour) and Aita al-Shaab (Bint Jbeil). 


- Airstrikes targeted Abba, in the Nabatieh district, and Zrarieh, in the Saida district. 


- Israeli airstrikes wounded nine people when bombing a residential building in Arnaba, in the Saida district, located between Maghdoucheh and Zeita. This is the first strike on the area since Oct. 8, 2023. 


- A strike on Mayfadoun (Nabatieh district) killed seven people and wounded several others — the casualties were displaced people who fled from the village of Kfar Kila, in the Marjayoun district. Among the victims were Hussein Halawi, a pharmacist, and his family, who fled their village, Kfar Kila.

Around midnight, Hezbollah issued a statement threatening further attacks if Israel's offensive in Lebanon continued. The party warned that "aggression against the population in Lebanon will make Haifa and other cities targets for the Resistance's missiles, just like Kiryat Shmona and Metula" along with other border towns. It added that "what happened today in southern Haifa is just a foretaste if Israel continues its aggression against our people," referencing yesterday's deadly attack on a military base south of Haifa.

Here are this morning's updates on Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon


- At 6:30 a.m., airstrikes targeted Shebaa and Hebbarieh, both in the Hasbaya district. Artillery fire also targeted houses and the outskirts of the villages.


- At 7:00 a.m., an airstrike killed two people when it targeted al-Marj neighborhood in Ansar, in the Nabatieh district. Rescue workers from the al-Rissala Scouts, affiliated with the Amal movement, reported rescuing several people wounded and reopening the main road at the village's western entrance, following the Israeli strike. 


- Airstrikes also targeted homes in Yohomr, in the Nabatieh district, destroying at least five houses. The strikes also targeted the area around the village's public school and severed the main road.


- Airstrikes completely destroyed two homes in Maaroub, in the Sour district.

Yesterday, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for 38 operations and attacks against Israel, marking the highest number in a single day since Oct. 8, 2023. 


At 1:05 a.m., Hezbollah said it struck Israeli soldiers in Labbouneh, in southern Lebanon’s Sour district. Ten minutes later, another attack reportedly targeted Israeli forces at the Khallet Warda site, near Aita al-Shaab (Marjayoun district). At 2 a.m., Hezbollah claimed it launched another salvo of missiles at Israeli forces in Khallet Warda.


By 3:15 a.m., the group said it targeted Israeli troops "during an attempt by enemy infantry forces to infiltrate Lebanese territory" near Markaba, a village in the Marjayoun district. Finally, at 3:40 a.m., Hezbollah reported another strike on Israeli forces in Labbouneh. 


Today, Hezbollah has claimed five attacks so far.
