On the afternoon of Sept. 27, Ali Hajj Ali drove from Haret Hreik to Achrafieh to visit his wife. They had not separated, but war had separated them. She fled their home in Beirut’s southern suburbs to stay with their daughter in the north-eastern Beirut neighborhood, after thousands of people were wounded in the simultaneous detonation of Hezbollah’s pagers in mid-September.In her haste to leave, she forgot some things back in their Haret Hreik home that she needed with her. So he collected them and brought them to Achrafieh.She had prepared two warm meals, one of them was dawood basha, a hearty meatball and tomato sauce stew with rice.
