BEIRUT — Caretaker Energy Minister Walid Fayad held an "emergency meeting" on Wednesday to assess the condition of vital water and energy infrastructure, "particularly in areas affected by attacks and displacement, where water demand has increased," according to a statement from his press office.
Heads of water establishments from across the country attended the meeting and provided Fayad with "detailed reports on the current status of water and sanitation networks, pumping mechanisms, and supply, highlighting the damages caused by Israeli attacks" in their respective areas.
Several water production stations, pumps, and distribution networks are now out of service, with the latest attack targeting the main conduit carrying water from the Litani River, jeopardizing Lebanon's water and food security.
The meeting addressed the logistical needs of these facilities, and Fayad "directed efforts to secure necessary accommodations or facilitate staff access to their institutions, aiming to enhance efforts to maintain the continuity of essential services in these challenging circumstances."
The water officials confirmed that water pumping has been increased in areas hosting displaced persons and housing centers, in response to the large numbers seeking refuge in official schools across Lebanon.
Fayad reported to the government and the emergency committee on requests for support, both to cover revenue shortfalls due to the halt in tax collection amid displacement and for operational needs arising from the ongoing aggression.
The past two weeks have seen a rapid escalation in the nearly year-long conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
More than 1.5 million people have been displaced in Lebanon, many sheltering in schools, while some have set up makeshift tents in public spaces.
The Lebanese Health Ministry announced Wednesday that the death toll from Israeli attacks on Lebanon has risen to 2,119, with another 10,019 injured since Oct. 8, 2023.
