The announcement of the Lebanese baccalaureate official examination results a week ago was an opportunity for L’Orient-Le Jour to talk to caretaker Education Minister Abbas Halabi about key issues, including teachers’ salaries, reforms in the educational sector and the Lebanese University’s independence. Halabi has been working on these dossiers amid the ongoing Israel-Hezbolalh war, the threat of regional conflagration, dysfunctional institutions, political paralysis and a limited budget. “I’m trying to proceed patiently, amid all these contradictions, separating politics from education,” he said.
