Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has sent a telegram to Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, offering his condolences following the death of Nasrallah's mother, the Lebanese state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported Sunday.
Hezbollah and the al-Manar television channel first announced the death of Nahdiya Safieddine on Saturday evening. A second statement, issued in the evening on behalf of the "Hezbollah command," said she had died "after a long battle with illness," saluting the memory of a "believing mother, who gave birth to a faithful and generous family."
The party offered its condolences to the Nasrallah family, in particular to the deceased's husband, Abdelkarim Nasrallah. The funeral took place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, in Ghobeiri, in the southern suburbs of Beirut.
