BEIRUT — Three people have been rescued in "stable condition," with another two still trapped under the rubble of a residential building that collapsed on Monday in Mansourieh, just outside Beirut, according to the Civil Defense.
"Our teams are working to rescue two other people trapped under the rubble," Civil Defense Director Raymond Khattar told L'Orient Today.
Khattar added that it was unclear exactly what caused the collapse, which followed two days of heavy rains across Lebanon. "The municipality and the Interior Ministry will conduct the necessary investigations," he said.
The mayor of Mansourieh did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the incident.
The incident has sparked concern and calls for further investigation into the safety standards of buildings in Lebanon, particularly in light other structures that have collapsed due to extreme weather, earthquakes and old age.
