SOUTHERN LEBANON — A man was killed Monday morning in southern Lebanon by a land mine explosion while inspecting his land on the outskirts of Ain Ibl, according to our correspondent. The victim, Edgard Jillo, was an Internal Security Forces officer and also worked as a farmer, according to Ayoub Khoreish, president of the local municipal council.
On Sunday, a retired soldier was killed by Israeli artillery fire near Yater while picking olives in his field. Earlier that morning, another man was killed when a munition exploded in Froun, on the edge of the occupied area of southern Lebanon.
Meanwhile, Israeli media reported Sunday evening that a soldier had been slightly injured in an "operational incident" in southern Lebanon. The soldier was reportedly wounded by an explosion of munitions while inside a Merkava tank. An Israeli army spokesperson cited by the press said the soldier had been taken to the hospital and that an investigation had been opened.
This is not the first time Israeli soldiers have been injured in similar incidents in southern Lebanon. Last Thursday, a 21-year-old officer was killed when his vehicle overturned near the Litani River. Journalist Doron Kadosh of Israeli radio GLZ reported that "more than 10 soldiers have been injured in Lebanon over the past two weeks" and that some soldiers stationed in the South "were injured while playing with munitions and grenades."
On Monday morning, the Israeli army announced it had "launched an interceptor at a suspicious aerial target detected in the airspace" over southern Lebanon, where its forces are operating. "Details are being reviewed," the army added. A similar alert had been issued on Sunday evening, without further details regarding the nature of the detected target.
On Monday, Army Commander General Rodolph Haykal met with the head of state; they discussed the situation in southern Lebanon — where the military is tasked with disarming Hezbollah — as well as the ongoing Israeli strikes.
Two tanks and 30 soldiers in eastern Kfar Shuba
On the ground, multiple artillery strikes were reported Sunday evening and Monday morning by our correspondent.
Monday morning, two Merkava tanks accompanied by 30 soldiers also left Rouweissat al-Alam hill and headed toward the Shaab al-Hafour area in eastern Kfar Shuba (Hasbaya), then to the Shmeis area, where they deployed, our correspondent reported. Their deployment was accompanied by automatic gunfire directed at the eastern part of the village.
An Israeli drone also struck Kfar Tibnit (Nabatieh), which also came under artillery fire. Israeli artillery also shelled the al-Areesh area on the outskirts of Hariss (Bint Jbeil), as well as the outskirts of Kfar Shuba (Hasbaya), Wadi Slouqi (Marjayoun) and the vicinity of Halta (Hasbaya). Heavy artillery fire was reported in Mansouri (Sour), while machine gun fire swept Zawtar Sharqieh (Nabatieh). The Israeli army also set homes on fire in Khiam (Marjayoun).
Sunday night, Israeli artillery struck Wadi Slouqi and Khiam (Marjayoun), Mansouri and Wadi Zibqin (Sour), as well as Braasheet and Beit Yahoun (Bint Jbeil). A Merkava tank fired two missiles at Braasheet, while other tanks were spotted in Haddatha in the same district. Five artillery shells landed in an area between Zawtar Sharqieh and Mayfadoun, as well as in Nabatieh Fawqa and Dohat Kfar Roummane, in the Nabatieh district.
Israeli attacks continue daily in southern Lebanon, especially in the vast area of more than 600 square kilometers occupied by Israel.
