BEIRUT — Caretaker Justice Minister Henri Khoury called on Monday for Banque du Liban (BDL) governor Riad Salameh to resign after a red notice by Interpol for suspected corruption. The notice followed a request by French authorities.

"It would be good if the Banque du Liban governor submitted his resignation because the proceedings against him in France could have repercussions on the monetary situation" of Lebanon, Khoury said in a statement to local TV station LBCI.

Khoury added he would communicate this recommendation "in a clear way" to the relevant officials.

Salameh has denied the charges gains him, and has said he will appeal the Interpol red notice.

Last Friday, caretaker Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi said Salameh's resignation had become "necessary" following the Interpol notice. He added that the issue was to be discussed at a consultative cabinet meeting on Monday, but that it was already part of the discussions between the country's top leaders.

Khoury and Mawlawi join caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Saade Chami who on Thursday called for Salameh to resign.

Salameh's term expires at the end of June. He is accused by his detractors, as well as many Lebanese, of being one of the people responsible for country's economic downfall.
