Two children killed by unidentified explosion in Arsal

BEIRUT — Ali Hussein Atrash, 12, and his sister Fatima, 10, were killed Wednesday in an explosion of an "unidentified body" in Arsal in the Bekaa, a security source told L'Orient Today's correspondent in the area. 

According to the source, the two kids were searching for scrap metal when they encountered an explosive device. An investigation has been opened into the incident. 

Landmine explosions are not uncommon in Lebanon, the remnants of several wars. The landmines remain buried in various areas of the country and continue to claim victims.

Mine clearance operations conducted by UN teams and the Lebanese Army cleared many such devices.
