Journalist Fawzi Zibian was assaulted and targeted by gunfire on Wednesday in Choueifat, south of Beirut, following a dispute with a chief warrant officer of the Lebanese Army, according to Al-Modon, the media outlet with which he collaborates.
According to the outlet, the chief warrant officer arrived at the scene armed, accompanied by a member of the Choueifat municipality, who was also armed. Shots were fired during the incident, but it was not immediately possible to determine which of the two men had used his weapon.
The journalist was also struck with a baton. He sustained a head injury, suffers from bruises on his hand, and the windows of his vehicle were smashed.
Al-Modon condemned what it described as an “unjustifiable” attack on its contributor, described as “a citizen, writer and intellectual,” and called for an investigation and prosecution of anyone found to be responsible.
Contacted by L’Orient-Le Jour, a source from the Internal Security Forces (ISF) indicated that the circumstances of the incident remain unclear and that an investigation is indeed underway to determine them. The Lebanese Army, for its part, stated that it currently does not have information on the matter.
