BEIRUT — Lebanon has recorded one new death from the coronavirus in the last 24 hours and 188 new cases, according to a report released Wednesday by the Health Ministry.

This brings the total number of deaths from the disease to 10,757 since the first case of Covid-19 was recorded in Lebanon in Feb. 2020. Since then, 1,224,495 people have been infected.

Tests performed in the past seven days showed a 14.8 percent positivity rate, while the occupancy at hospital Covid-19 units was 23 percent in the past 24 hours, with 98 hospitalizations. The past 24 hours also saw 15 percent of intensive care beds occupied, with 28 patients.

Caretaker Health Minister Firass Abiad declared in early January that Lebanon is experiencing a new wave of Covid-19, but said the situation was still under control.

The number of daily cases was then slightly above 100, after having long hovered at around a few dozen per day for several months. "The situation is still under control, and we expect the number of infections to decrease later on, as it did in the previous waves," he added.

Lebanon is also still grappling with its first cholera outbreak since 1993, although case numbers have sharply declined in recent weeks..
