BEIRUT — Unidentified persons beat and robbed a man of around $100,000 on the Abdeh-Halba highway in Akkar governorate Wednesday, a security source told L'Orient Today.

The robbers fled to an unknown destination, and security services launched an investigation into the incident, the source said.

The victim was reportedly transferred to Tripoli Governmental Hospital for treatment.

Earlier in November, caretaker Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi said that the crime rate in Lebanon has not increased so far this year despite a spiraling economic crisis, in comparison with the same period last year.

Mawlawi's statement contradicts that of General Security chief Abbas Ibrahim and Joseph Aoun who warned earlier this year of social instability in the wake of the crisis.
