A priori, the initiative has been a success. Grand Mufti Abdel-Latif Derian gathered the vast majority of Sunni representatives from across the political spectrum on Sept. 24 at Dar al-Fatwa.The objective is to revive the role of the Sunni community and its decision-making power, which were seriously eroded when former Prime Minister Saad Hariri withdrew from politics. The initiative aimed to put an end to the community’s fragmentation and to prove that it still had a say on the political scene.In terms of form, it was almost flawless. Only a few MPs boycotted the meeting, including the two elected MPs of the protest movement, Ibrahim Mneimneh and Halimé El Kaakour — who did not attend in protest of the demonization campaign they contend they were subjected to because of their stance in favor of secularism — as well as the independent MP...
