US mediator Amos Hochstein’s return to Beirut has been expected for several days now. Tasked with helping negotiate the demarcation of the maritime border between Lebanon and Israel, Hochstein is set to arrive Friday with an Israeli response to the latest Lebanese proposal in the dispute. The date of this visit had been repeatedly postponed amid threats of military escalation from both sides and contradictory information on the content of the talks. Hezbollah even reportedly told the US that if Hochstein failed to return before mid-September, the dispute could escalate, according to Lebanese political sources with knowledge of the matter, who spoke with L’Orient-Le Jour on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the negotiations.
