BEIRUT — Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah met with the number two of Hamas' political bureau, Saleh al-Arouri, the state-owned National News Agency reported Sunday.

Here’s what we know:

    • The two leaders "discussed and assessed the political and field developments in Palestine, Lebanon and in the region. They also discussed the latest clashes in Gaza and the West Bank, and what the situation could lead to in the region, a Hezbollah statement said.

    • Arouri led the Palestinian student movement and helped establish the military wing of Hamas in the occupied West Bank. He was detained several times by Israel before being deported in 2010 to Syria. He is currently based in Beirut.

    • In early August, hostilities broke out between Israel and an organization in Gaza, the Islamic Jihad, before the two sides agreed to a truce proposed by Egypt after three days of clashes that killed at least 41 Palestinians.

    • Last June, the head of Hamas' political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, was received by Nasrallah during a visit to Beirut, where he also met with President Michel Aoun.
