Amal Movement calls for end to political ‘disputes’ as presidential election nears

BEIRUT — The Amal movement released a statement Monday criticizing Sunday’s exchange of accusations between caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and the leader of the Free Patriotic Movement Gebran Bassil, calling for a “responsible dialogue” between the parties, as the presidential election approaches in October.

Here’s what we know:

    • Bassil and Mikati issued statements on Sunday evening accusing one another of corruption and government blockage. It is not the first time in recent weeks that the two men have bickered over formation of the Cabinet.

    • “It is necessary to reduce disputes, personal score-settling and tensions through press releases, as well as information leaks,” the Amal Movement statement on Monday said.

    • The statement also called for the immediate formation of a government, a process that has been stalled for months as a compromise has not yet been reached.
