BEIRUT — Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh, who has been on a visit in Lebanon for several days, met on Sunday with MP Hassan Mrad (West Bekaa), our correspondent int the area reported.

According to a brief press release, Haniyeh and Mrad "discussed the latest developments ... in occupied Palestine."

"Mrad insisted on the importance of resisting the Israeli occupation ... and on the fact that the Palestinian cause is the central cause of the Arab nation ...," the press release added. However, no statement by Haniyeh has been reported.

The Hamas leader said Saturday from Beirut that "Israel has been grafted into the region to face its party, Hezbollah and Iran." These remarks came as tensions between Lebanon and the Israeli state are heightened following the arrival of a gas platform in the offshore Karish gas field, parts of which are disputed between the two states.

Haniyeh, who arrived in Beirut on Wednesday, has already spoken with Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah about the "development of the resistance and the threats and challenges to come." On Friday, Haniyeh expressed his refusal, from the Presidential Palace of Baabda, to see the Israeli state "steal the maritime wealth of Lebanon." This move comes after Israel threatened Lebanon, 10 days ago, with "massive and devastating bombardments if ever a war broke out."
