BEIRUT — The Democratic Meeting, a parliamentary bloc affiliated with the Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) of Walid Joumblatt, announced on Tuesday its support for the candidacy of Nawaf Salam for prime minister.
Here’s what we know:
• Nawaf Salam is the former Lebanese ambassador to the United Nations and current judge at the International Court of Justice.
• The binding parliamentary consultations scheduled for Thursday at the Presidential Palace. A prime minister responsible for forming the new government will have to be appointed following these consultations.
• In a statement issued after a meeting chaired by Joumblatt, the bloc announced that it will appoint Salam to form the next government, affirming however its intention not to be represented in the future cabinet.
• The group reiterated its "conviction of the need to form a ministerial team without delay, far from any blockage, so that it can embark on the missions entrusted to it."
