BEIRUT – Dozens of Ukrainian citizens in Lebanon demonstrated in Jbeil on Saturday against the invasion of their country by Russia.

Here’s what we know:

    • The protest took place in what is known as Ukraine Square outside the Jbeil souks after a church service in the nearby St. Rita Church. During the service, parishioners prayed in support of Ukraine and for the end of Russian hostilities there. They then gathered in the Ukraine Public Garden in the city at 1 p.m. to demonstrate against the ongoing Russian war on Ukraine.

    • During the demonstration protesters chanted “Russia go home” and played the Ukrainian national anthem on loudspeakers. This comes after a similar protest in Beirut on Thursday outside the Russian Embassy. Ukraine's Ambassador to Lebanon, Ihor Ostash, spoke during Saturday’s protest. The demonstrators then marched in the Jbeil souks with their flags and banners.

    • On Saturday, the Lebanese Foreign Ministry announced procedures for Lebanese wishing to leave Ukraine to cross into Poland and Romania.

    • After weeks of mounting tension, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a “military operation” in Ukraine on Thursday. According to Ukrainian officials the invasion has so far killed 198 Ukrainians.
