National Federation of Trade Unions calls for a demonstration on Sunday

BEIRUT— In a statement, the President of the National Federation of Trade Unions Castro Abdallah called for a strike on Sunday, asking his members for “heavy participation in the demonstration.” The strike aims to increase the minimum wage, transportation fees for workers and for social security funds to be calculated using the parallel market rate.

Here’s what we know:

    • Abdallah said a march will start at 3 p.m. at the Association of Banks and will pass by the Serail and end at Banque du Liban.

    • He pointed out that the aim of the demonstration is to confront the government, “which is working to approve the 2022 budget without burdening banks and without retrieving marine and river properties built and invested on without any legal fright.”

    • Abdallah added that he is seeking to “raise the minimum wage to LL12 million, and make transportation allowance equivalent to taxi fees and raise family compensation in social security to 75 percent of the new minimum wage.”
