France to donate buses for Lebanon, public works and transport minister says

BEIRUT — France will donate buses to Lebanon as part of a potential transport plan, according to Public Works and Transport Minister Ali Hamieh, who is on an official visit to Paris to meet his French counterpart Jean-Baptiste Djebbari.

    • The two ministers met to discuss potential cooperation between France and Lebanon in the public transportation sector along with the restoration of the port of Beirut, ravaged by the deadly blast Aug. 4, 2020.

    • During the meeting, the French Minister expressed his readiness to share his expertise with Lebanon in order to draw up a regulatory framework for cooperation between the public and private sectors concerning public transport in the country.

    • The considerable increase in gasoline prices has exacerbated the need to reform the public transport sector in Lebanon. Many ministers had already addressed the issue, but no serious reform has yet been set in motion, with the public transport network in the country notoriously in tatters.
