BEIRUT — Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati landed in Egypt on Monday morning, at the invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, to participate in the World Youth Forum, Mikati said in a tweet.

Here’s what we know:

    • The Prime Minister was received along with his wife by al-Sisi upon his arrival at noon.

    • After meeting with Mikati, the Egyptian president said that “Egypt is willing to contribute in sending gas [to Lebanon] according to the awaited deals,” adding that he has given his orders to speed up the process.

    • Lebanon is currently working on a deal to import natural gas from Egypt through Jordan and Syria to supply the country's faltering national power grid and alleviate widespread electricity cuts.

    • Mikati will deliver a speech at the forum, which takes place in the seaside town of Sharm el-Sheikh, according to the prime minister’s office.

    • This trip comes as Lebanon continues to drown in political paralysis. The government, which was formed in early September, has not met since October 12 due to discord between the parties regarding the role of port blast investigation head Judge Tarek Bitar.

    • Mikati had announced Wednesday that he would convene the government once the 2022 budget is received, saying at the time that it would be ready "within two days.” The completion of the budget had not yet been announced.
