Aoun calls for prosecution of those who engaged in celebratory gunfire on New Year’s Eve

BEIRUT — President Michel Aoun on Monday called on security forces and the judiciary to prosecute those who shot in the air during New Year’s Eve celebrations, a tweet from the president’s official account said.

Here’s what we know:

    • Aoun called on the authorities to “take the necessary measures” against those who fired in the air “in order to avoid this phenomenon, which scares people and damages them and their properties.”

    • The Internal Security Forces said in a statement Saturday that it has identified 120 people suspected of shooting in the air on New Year’s Eve and is working on arresting those individuals.

    • In its statement, the ISF said that one person was slightly injured in the Tariq al-Jadideh are of Beirut due to the “uncivilized and barbaric shooting.”

    • Marking the New Year by firing in the air is a years-old practice in Lebanon. Last year, such gunfire killed a Syrian woman in a refugee camp in Baalbeck and caused light damage to an aircraft at Rafik Hariri International Airport in Beirut.
