BEIRUT — The Energy Ministry on Thursday set the price of the kilowatt hour produced by metered private generators in December at LL7,104, an increase of 9.26 percent compared to the previous month’s price of LL6,502 per kilowatt hour.

Here’s what we know:

    • The fee is higher by an additional 10 percent in mountainous regions (over 700 meters above sea level) and in rural areas, according to the ministry’s decision.

    • The November tariff was calculated based on the price of diesel, which was LL340,794 per 20 liters compared to LL314,386 the previous month.

    • The ministry also asked back-up generator owners to abide by the Economy Ministry’s order to install meters, so as to charge consumers by their consumption and not by flat rates.

    • The Lebanese state has repeatedly pushed the largely unregulated generator sector to install meters, with the latest circular by Economy Minister Amin Salem on Oct. 7 calling on generator owners to install meters appearing to fall flat.
