The criticisms are becoming increasingly audible. In recent weeks, President Joseph Aoun has found himself at the center of several attacks launched notably by prominent Christian figures, including, quite unusually, Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai. These criticisms focus mainly on the handling of negotiations with Israel and the issue of Hezbollah’s disarmament. Certainly, these voices echo a public opinion that has so far been disappointed by the record of Aoun’s presidency. But this does not mean that the head of state has lost his Christian legitimacy.
