Iran has received a formal US response to its latest proposal to end the war in the Middle East, the government said Wednesday, without disclosing its contents, AFP reported.
“Today at the cabinet meeting, the proposal from the American side was presented to President Massoud Pezeshkian by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi,” government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani told the official IRNA news agency.
After more than seven months of conflict and diplomatic deadlock, indirect talks between Washington and Tehran resumed last week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The outcome of the talks remains uncertain. Iran says it has presented seven conditions for ending hostilities and reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key sticking point in the conflict.
Not all of the conditions have been made public, but Tehran is demanding an end to hostilities on all fronts in the Middle East, including in Lebanon where Israel is fighting Hezbollah, as well as the unfreezing of Iranian assets held abroad, the lifting of sanctions on its oil sector and an end to the US blockade.
US President Donald Trump rejected the proposal publicly on Saturday, but Tehran had been awaiting an official response through Qatari mediators.
Strait of Hormuz remains key sticking point
Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz after Israel and the United States launched the war in late February. Washington retaliated months later by imposing its own blockade on Iranian ports, restricting Tehran’s crude oil exports.
A lull has been observed on the ground in recent weeks, with the United States not having struck Iran since Sept. 1, although ships have continued to come under attack in the Strait of Hormuz. Washington has meanwhile intensified economic pressure on Tehran, placing all Iranian airlines under sanctions and vowing to take a tough stance against foreign companies that assist them.
