Syria's Internal Security Forces announced on Tuesday that it thwarted a "sabotage plot in the Yarmouk Basin in Daraa" and arrested a "cell affiliated with Hezbollah," according to Syria's official news agency SANA.
"In a preemptive security operation, the General Intelligence Directorate, in cooperation with the Internal Security Forces, thwarted a sabotage plot in the Yarmouk Basin in Daraa and arrested a three-member cell affiliated with the Hezbollah militia. The suspects are identified as (F.K.), (Z.M.) and (L.A.)," the Syrian Internal Security Forces said, according to Syrian state-run Al-Ikhbariya channel.
"The operation followed close monitoring of the cell’s attempts to set up rocket-launching platforms with the aim of carrying out attacks to destabilize security and stability," the statement added. "The platforms were completely dismantled, while investigations with the detainees are ongoing ahead of their referral to the competent judiciary to face justice."
The Syrian authorities are hostile to Hezbollah, which was an ally of ousted President Bashar al-Assad and participated in the Syrian civil war in support of the former regime.
Damascus has repeatedly announced the seizure of weapons intended for the Iran-backed group near the Lebanese border. Hezbollah denies the claims and says that it no longer has any activity in Syria.
Earlier this month, Lebanon arrested a former Syrian colonel and several accomplices who allegedly planned attacks against forces of Syria’s new government and reportedly received military training from Hezbollah fighters in eastern Lebanon.
