BEIRUT — An Israeli man from the northern town of Majd al-Krum was arrested on suspicion of maintaining contact with a "foreign agent" from Lebanon and carrying out "security-related missions" at her direction, the Shin Bet and Israel Police said in a joint statement.
The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Hamdan Hamdan, allegedly remained in contact with the agent for several months and "was aware that he was communicating with a foreign agent from Lebanon." He was allegedly instructed by her to carry out security-related missions, according to the statement.
According to the statement, "the foreign agent attempted to compensate Hamdan by purchasing products in Israel and transferring them to him."
The investigation was conducted jointly by the Shin Bet and Israel Police’s Lahav 433 unit. An indictment against Hamdan is expected to be filed Sunday.
Lebanese law also prohibits contact with Israel, which is punishable by imprisonment. People convicted of spying for Israel have been sentenced to up to 25 years in prison in the past.
