Medication smuggling in Lebanon: Egyptian distributor arrested, pharmacists questioned

The pharmaceutical sector in Lebanon continues to reveal its abuses and shortcomings. While a case involving six medications was recently investigated by the Court of Cassation’s prosecutor over suspicions of poor quality and ineffectiveness, the financial prosecutor is simultaneously examining a file on the smuggling of several other drugs, including one used to treat diabetes and obesity and another for immunotherapy against certain types of cancer. As part of this second case, an Egyptian national suspected of distributing smuggled medications to approximately 30 pharmacies in Mount Lebanon has been arrested, according to a judicial source who told L’Orient-Le Jour.
