Yemen’s Houthi rebels targeted the Red Sea port of al-Makha in southwestern Yemen with missiles and drones on Sunday, according to Yemen Today TV and state-run Saba TV.
The port, which is controlled by Yemen’s internationally recognized government, was targeted with several missiles that struck civilian areas inside the facility, the port’s director told Yemen Today.
The statement by Yemen’s Houthis claims that the recent attack, which was carried out with “a large number of ballistic missiles and drones” on the Red Sea port, was “accurate.”
According to the group’s military spokesman, it “resulted in widespread destruction” of equipment and weapons and “the death and injury of dozens, including Saudis.”
The statement said: “We will not allow the Saudi enemy to achieve its goals of targeting our people and throwing our sons into the inferno of death to serve its conspiratorial agenda for the benefit of the enemies of the nation."
Fighting has escalated intermittently across several front lines in Yemen since last month, with dozens of people reported killed or wounded on both sides.
Yemen had experienced a relative calm since April 2022, after years of conflict between government forces, supported by a Saudi-led coalition, and the Iran-backed Houthis, who took control of Sanaa and swaths of the country in 2014.
