Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Saturday there is ‘’no military solution’’ to the renewed clashes between Yemen’s Tehran-backed Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabia.
In an interview published Saturday by the state-run newspaper Iran Daily, Araghchi called for ‘’dialogue’’ between the warring parties as the conflict between Iran and the United States has dragged on for months and spread across the region. He said the incidents in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which links the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, are ‘’rooted in longstanding disputes and problems between Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the region’s countries.’’
Hostilities between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia resumed July 13 after four years of truce. Saudi Arabia had backed Yemen’s internationally recognized government against the rebels since 2015.
The Houthis, who attacked a Saudi airport last week, claimed responsibility Saturday for a missile strike on the Saudi coastal city of Jizan near the Yemeni border. The group had earlier reported Saudi airstrikes on Hodeida, the Red Sea port it controls, and vowed to retaliate. On Monday, the Houthis also announced plans to block Saudi shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
