The Syrian General Authority for Land and Sea Ports stated on Tuesday that the customs thwarted an attempt to smuggle around "226 RGC-type grenades" inside a vehicle heading toward Lebanese territory.
"The Customs Directorate of Jdeidet Yabous in the Damascus countryside seized 226 grenades of type 'RGC' that were tightly hidden in secret compartments inside a vehicle heading toward Lebanese territory," reads the statement.
A video published alongside the statement shows the customs personnel arresting one person after discovering the grenades in the car.
Syria frequently announces the seizing of weapon shipments to Lebanon and often accuse Hezbollah of being the recipient of these arm transfers. The Syrian authorities are hostile to Hezbollah, which was an ally of ousted President Bashar al-Assad.
Tuesday's statement, however, made no mention of the Iran-backed party. It is worthy to note that Hezbollah mainly rely on drones, missiles, and explosive devices in its military operations, rather than grenades. Hezbollah had denied every Syrian accusation, stressing that the party has no presence or activity in Syria.
Last week, a source at the Syrian Interior Ministry told Syria's state-run news agency SANA that Syrian authorities foiled an attempt to smuggle a shipment of "sophisticated weapons and missiles" across the Syrian-Iraqi border destined for Hezbollah.
