Iranian attackers killed two members of the country’s security forces in Mashhad, where former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s funeral took place Thursday, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported Saturday.
Tasnim did not specify when the attack occurred or identify the assailants. The two victims belonged to the Basij, a paramilitary force affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Iran’s ideological military. According to the agency, the attackers killed the two men while they were patrolling Mashhad, about 15 kilometers from the Imam Reza shrine, Iran’s holiest Shia site, where Khamenei was buried early Friday. ‘’A pedestrian was also wounded by the assailants and taken to the hospital,’’ Tasnim added.
A U.S.-Israeli strike killed Khamenei at the end of February, at the outset of the war in the Middle East. Iran and the United States resumed hostilities this week, exchanging strikes in their most significant escalation since signing a memorandum of understanding on June 17 that formalized the April cease-fire.
