As fashion school students graduate amid an exodus from the industry, the question is whether the next generation of designers can carry on the legacy of those who came before them.

There is little doubt, relative to the country's size, that the Lebanese fashion market remains one of the most vibrant in the world. Since at least 2019, however, many young designers have either thrown in the towel or sought opportunities elsewhere. Even so, the local scene continues to attract and inspire new talent, buoyed by a reputation that extends beyond the country's borders.The 1975 war erupted during a moment of apparent economic prosperity, disrupting a cosmopolitan society open to all forms of culture and subculture, bourgeois, sociable, always eager for novelty, and obsessed with a particular body culture. Ready-to-wear had already started supplanting the tradition of the home seamstress as well as tailors and shirt makers who welcomed loyal clients by appointment and crafted garments to measure.
