BEIRUT — President Joseph Aoun received a phone call Sunday evening from U.S. President Donald Trump, a day after Lebanon and Israel signed a framework agreement, according to a statement posted on the Lebanese presidency's X account.
Trump congratulated Aoun on the agreement, signed in Washington, and reaffirmed U.S. support for Lebanon. The U.S. "will spare no effort" to support Lebanon's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, as well as the extension of state authority, through its army, across Lebanese territory, the statement cited Trump as saying.
He added that the United States would help support Lebanon's economy and its legitimate security forces so that the country can regain its leading role in the region and internationally.
For his part, Aoun thanked Trump for his support and said the Lebanese state "will fully assume its responsibilities in implementing the framework agreement."
He said he hopes that the United States would help prevent any violations of the deal and ensure all commitments are honored, particularly by pressuring Israel to withdraw from the territories it occupies in south Lebanon to facilitate the deployment of the Lebanese Army up to the internationally recognized border.
At the end of the call, Trump confirmed that he would meet Aoun "soon" in Washington.
The framework agreement signed Friday provides, among other measures, for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from two "pilot zones" in occupied south Lebanon and their handover to the Lebanese Army.
Hezbollah has rejected the agreement, as it has consistently opposed direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, and has threatened civil unrest if the Lebanese authorities do not reverse their decision.
