BEIRUT — President Joseph Aoun "hailed" on Monday the agreement between Washington and Tehran, during a phone call received from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, according to a statement from the Lebanese presidency.
During the call, President Aoun welcomed the agreement reached by Iran and the United States, expressing hope that it "marks a positive step toward reducing tensions and paves the way for diplomatic solutions that contribute to strengthening security and stability at both the regional and international levels."
The importance of "continuing political and diplomatic efforts aimed at consolidating lasting stability in the region" was also emphasized, reiterating that "the stability, security, and sovereignty of Lebanon remain a national priority."
For his part, Araghchi stressed "the importance of respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty and the integrity of its territory by all parties," expressing hope that the positive atmosphere created by the agreement "will help support Lebanon’s stability and enhance its chances for recovery and prosperity."
Araghchi also spoke by phone with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri. The Iranian minister detailed the clauses of the agreement reached by his country with the United States, explaining to Berri that "the clause [related to the cease-fire in Lebanon] must be implemented in its entirety immediately, from the first day and throughout the 60-day period" of subsequent negotiations.
According to him, "the guarantee and commitment are the responsibility of the United States and the parties guaranteeing the memorandum of understanding." For his part, Berri thanked "the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as all regional and international parties, for their support and solidarity with Lebanon at this time."
The agreement, of which Lebanon has not been officially notified, provides for an end to the war on all fronts in the Middle East, according to Iran.
