A gathering of Maronite bishops from Lebanon and the diaspora on Saturday called on the Lebanese people "to unite around their state in accordance with the Constitution, and to support their institutions and the Lebanese Army so that they can fulfill their responsibilities," at the conclusion of a synod held at the Maronite Patriarchate in Bkerke (Kesrouan) from June 3 to 13 at the request of Patriarch Bechara Rai.

"It is necessary to support the state, which is striving to hold direct Lebanese-Israeli talks, under American sponsorship and with Arab and international support, with the aim of coming up with solutions that safeguard Lebanese rights and protect full sovereignty over the entire territory, while ensuring an era of lasting and comprehensive peace," the synod's final statement said.

Lebanon began direct negotiations with Israel in early April in an effort to end the war that erupted after Hezbollah opened a front on March 2 in support of its Iranian ally, then under Israeli-U.S. attack. Hezbollah and its ally, Amal, continue to reject the direct talks, arguing that Iran should handle the issue within the framework of its negotiations with the United States.

The Maronite Patriarchate has consistently backed the official Lebanese authorities, particularly President Joseph Aoun.

In their statement, the bishops stressed the importance of "reclaiming Lebanon's historical borders, ensuring Lebanese sovereignty, preserving coexistence among communities, maintaining Lebanon's modern parliamentary system and fostering love of country."

They also addressed the impact of the country's multiple crises on the population and underscored the Church's role in supporting Christian communities in Lebanon.

In a homily marking the close of the synod, Patriarch Rai said that "Lebanon, despite its wounds, remains the bearer of a great message ... and the Church, for its part, is called to remain the voice of right and hope."
