Maronite Patriarch Bechara al-Rai called on Sunday for the United Nations to guarantee Lebanon's neutrality, saying it is the only way the country can fulfill its mission as an example of "pluralism" and "freedom," using the expression "Lebanon-message" made famous by Pope John Paul II.

"Lebanon carries a presence in the field of mission. It is more than land and borders, more than a state and institutions: It is a message of freedom, dignity, pluralism and coexistence. This message can only be preserved if those responsible remain faithful to it, keep its essence, and understand the weight of the trust entrusted to them. Lebanon will only be able to accomplish this unique mission if the United Nations proclaims it a neutral state, meaning a positive and active neutrality," the head of the Maronite Church said during a Mass consecrating Lebanon and the diaspora to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary at the Basilica of Our Lady of Lebanon in Harissa.

Rai regularly calls for Lebanon's neutrality in regional conflicts and supports a return to the state's monopoly on arms, as well as direct negotiations for a lasting cessation of hostilities between Lebanon and Israel.
