Hezbollah’s disarmament: Is negotiating with Iran realistic?

Lebanon is biding its time. The state still refuses to use force to disarm Hezbollah, despite pressure from the United States and Israel, which have offered to “coordinate” with Beirut on this goal. After initially seeking to dissociate Lebanon’s situation from that of Iran, Lebanese officials now closely follow the outcome of the Islamabad talks between Washington and Tehran, in the hope of securing the Islamic Republic’s approval for the disarmament of the party militia. On the flip-side Joseph Aoun, navigating the ‘impossible’ President Joseph Aoun even seems to be hoping for the U.S.-Iran negotiations to ultimately lead to a resolution of the Hezbollah issue and at a lower cost for the Lebanese people.
