Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea hosted the Syrian chargé d’affaires in Lebanon, Iyad al-Hazzaa, in Meerab for an "introductory contact."

The Christian leader, a fierce opponent of the former Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad — overthrown at the end of 2024 by a coalition of Islamist rebels — discussed with his guest "the general situation and ongoing developments on both the Lebanese and regional scenes."

They also addressed the necessity and "importance of dialogue and political and diplomatic communication in the service of the interests of both countries and the peoples of Lebanon and Syria," according to the state-run National News Agency (NNA).

The meeting comes just days after Prime Minister Nawaf Salam's visit to Damascus at the head of a ministerial delegation, aiming to continue efforts to bring the two countries closer together amid a tense regional context.

Following this visit, Iyad al-Hazzaa went to Baabda for talks with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, as well as to the Grand Serail.
