Claude Semaan, president of the inquiry commission within the Beirut Order of Physicians and a member of the Order's council at the time of the events, was recently convicted of issuing a "false certificate" to the judiciary in the Sophie Mechleb case. Mechleb was left paralyzed in 2016 at the age of one following surgery that caused brain damage.The Metn Court of Appeal, presided over by Amani Salameh and also composed of Mohammad Farhat and Jessica Barmaki, ordered Semaan to pay one billion Lebanese Lira (about $11,000) in damages to the victim's family for "perjurious testimony."
