The chairman of the Nobel Peace Prize committee, Joergen Watne Frydnes, has urged Iranian authorities to release Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi so she can be cared for by a medical team and receive urgent treatment, as her life remains in danger, he told Reuters on Saturday.
Iranian human rights activist and vice president of the Defenders of Human Rights Center (DHRC), Narges Mohammadi, appears in an undated archive photo provided by her family.
The health of Narges Mohammadi, who won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her campaign for human rights in Iran, "has gravely deteriorated," Joergen Watne Frydnes said, quoting her family and her lawyer.
Narges Mohammadi had been serving a 12-year prison sentence until her temporary release in December 2024 for medical reasons. She was arrested again in December 2025 as part of a crackdown on intellectuals.
She is one of the leading figures in the defense of human rights in Iran, particularly committed to women's rights and the abolition of the death penalty.
