“Apparently, women who turn 50 are not considered dangerous in the state of Israel,” says Jerusalem-born artist Larissa Sansour. “About three years ago, after 15 years of being banned because of my West Bank identification card, I was allowed to go.”“I grew up there, but somehow my brain suppressed all those memories, convincing me that I have no relationship with that city. Going there, I realized that I know every corner of Jerusalem,” unlike Bethlehem, her family home, the location of much of her work. “It was like having a breakdown.”Sansour pauses. “How do you negotiate these memories? … I guess we all deal with these things to an extent.
