Bronze and Light

Where the land ends, the water begins — a constantly shifting world that advances and retreats, swallowing things up only to spit them back out, baptizing and engulfing. This is where they come to rest, standing before the rolling horizon, taking part in a ritual in which they are both servants and gods. To the uninitiated, the scene is always the same: rocks, the last remnants of the old land; mist hovering over the waves before lifting to reveal the sea’s shimmering, mercury-like surface, beneath which the drama of predator and prey unfolds — each creature both hunter and hunted.

The blazing light turns their bodies into bronze statues. Between the smoking hookah and coffee pot, rising like incense in a pagan ritual, ordinary conversations skim across the surface of disappointed lives. Drowned out by the sound of the waves, the words form garlands before drifting away as though they had never been spoken.

Few women are part of this world of naked bodies. The beach community is conservative, like a temple guardian. Loyalty is etched into the nerves. To be tattooed is to become a letter cast into the wind, ink that will eventually fade: a declaration seeking to make a raw, fleeting moment eternal, or a mark of an identity demanding to be recognized. Skin that signs, speaks or cries.

Through the lens of Mohamad Abdouni, artist, photographer and filmmaker, this monthly chronicle — a constellation of images, a correspondence from Beirut to the world — blurs the boundaries between art and documentary photography. His art and the words of Fifi Abou Dib answer one another, stepping beyond the frame to capture the tremors of reality.
