It seems unlikely that Cabinet appoints at Thursday’s meeting a successor to Top Prosecutor Jamal Hajjar, who is set to retire on Saturday. In the absence of a government decision, the highest ranking magistrate — in this case, Pierre Francis — is expected to automatically assume this post in an interim capacity until a permanent judge is appointed.Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and Justice Minister Adel Nassar — without whom the appointment seems unlikely — are currently abroad.
