Lebanon declares national mourning day after deadly Israeli strikes

BEIRUT — Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced Wednesday that Thursday, April 9, 2026, will be a day of national mourning to honor "the martyrs and the wounded from the Israeli attacks that targeted hundreds of civilian," according to a Cabinet statement.

Salam said government offices, public institutions, and municipalities will be closed, flags will be flown at half-mast, and radio and television programming will be adjusted to mark the national tragedy.

Israeli strikes across Lebanon on Wednesday killed over 100 civilians.

Salam extended his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. The prime minister is continuing consultations with Arab leaders and international officials "to put an end to the Israeli war machine," the statement concluded.
